The Get Side-Tracked Business Program: Free Promotion for Trailside Businesses in Western Nova Scotia
It was the Western REN who sparked the idea, seeing an opportunity to shape this impressive asset into a year-round go-to place for visitors and locals alike. This project is funded by the Western REN and the Province of NS through the Department of Growth and Development. The province contributed $213,825 from their Community Economic Development Fund while the Western REN contributed $70,040 for a total project budget of $283,325.
Running more than 200 km from Smith’s Cove to Barrington, this former railway line has been rebranded the Dark Sky T’Railway. This program helps connect ATV riders and other trail users to local businesses like cafés, shops, accommodations, and services. If your business can be legally accessed from the trail, this project could boost your visibility and revenue at no cost.
What Is the Dark Sky T’Railway?
Named for our internationally acclaimed stargazing conditions, the Dark Sky T’Railway travels through one of the clearest, darkest sky regions in the world. In 2014, it was recognized as North America’s first Starlight Reserve, and it’s become a hotspot for astro-tourism.
This rail trail isn’t just scenic—it’s a key economic development asset. With support from provincial funding, the trail is being upgraded to include:
- Branded signage and digital mapping
- Visitor rest stops, selfie spots, and outdoor art
- Trail additions to Google Maps
- Marketing support for local businesses
Why Join the Get Side-Tracked Business Program?
If your business is accessible from the trail, here’s what you’ll get as part of the Get Side-Tracked Business Program:
- Free signage on the trail directing users to your location
- Featured for 2 years on the ATVANS app ($300 value)
- Inclusion in a printed map brochure
- Social media promotion from the Western REN
- A branded window cling to show you’re ATV-friendly
This is a no-cost opportunity to connect with trail users who are ready to explore, shop, and spend.

What’s the Value For Your Business?
The numbers speak for themselves:
- 77% of trail users are ATV riders
- 35% spend 2–4 hours per visit
The average spend per trail user is $56.41
That’s money that could be spent at your location, especially if you’re featured on the trail map and signage. The Get Side-Tracked Business Program helps turn outdoor recreation into real revenue for local businesses.
