Dark Sky T’Railway: Western REN Launches New Trail Branding

Western Nova Scotia – April 23, 2025
The Western Regional Enterprise Network (Western REN) proudly unveils the official branding for its rail trail enhancement initiative: the Dark Sky T’Railway. Community members inspired the name, which celebrates the region’s breathtaking night skies and its vibrant culture of exploration.
As part of the Get Side-Tracked program, the newly named Dark Sky T’Railway runs for more than 200 kilometers, linking Smith’s Cove in Digby County to Barrington in Shelburne County. This placemaking initiative transforms the former rail line into a dynamic, welcoming corridor that connects trail users directly with local businesses, natural attractions, and community experiences
“This is such an exciting milestone for us,” said Brenda LaGrandeur, Special Projects Coordinator at Western REN. “The Dark Sky T’Railway is more than a trail — it’s a regional continuous asset that has the power to grow our local economy. We’re creating a unique experience that encourages people to stop, explore, and support our local businesses. When businesses along the trail are prepared, and welcoming to trail users, everyone benefits.”
Where Does the Name Originate?
The name “Dark Sky T’Railway” was selected following extensive consultation with local trail groups, tourism operators, community organizations, and other passionate trail supporters during public engagement sessions held in Fall 2024. The brand identity, including a distinctive new logo by local graphic designer Chris Abbott, reflects the trail’s potential to shine — day or night.
This is Just the Beginning
The branding marks just the beginning. Western REN is rolling out an array of enhancements along the trail, including:
- New signage to promote nearby businesses and hidden gems
- Rest stops with seating and amenities
- Outdoor art installations and selfie spots for memorable experiences
- Trail maps and consistent wayfinding to guide and inspire exploration
- Google Maps integration so users can plan and navigate their trail adventures easily
To strengthen the link between the trail and the local economy, participating businesses will have access to training programs, visibility on the ATVANS app free for one year, and inclusion on the official Dark Sky T’Railway Map — all free of charge for the first year.
What’s next?
Western REN is calling on local artists and creative teams to help bring the trail to life through an upcoming public art commission.Meanwhile, local businesses are encouraged to Get Side-Tracked by joining the trail program, unlocking promotional and support benefits designed to drive traffic and boost revenue.
Details on the business outreach campaign and art commission will be announced soon.
