Western Nova Scotia Entrepreneurs Shine at Spark Nova Scotia Competition

Innovation and entrepreneurial spirit took centre stage this week as emerging business leaders and innovators competed in the annual Spark Nova Scotia regional competition.

Spark Nova Scotia hosts three competitions each year across the province, serving the Southwest, Northern, and Cape Breton regions. The program helps early-stage entrepreneurs develop their ideas through training, mentorship, and opportunities to pitch their ventures. Competition winners can receive up to $50,000 in funding, along with ongoing guidance from experienced business professionals.

Every participant completes the Spark Training Program. Along the way, they build valuable business skills and connections that extend far beyond the competition.

This year’s Southwest competition showcased a strong field of finalists, including several entrepreneurs from communities across Western Nova Scotia. Western REN CEO Angelique LeBlanc chaired the judging panel.

NutriLolli Inc. captured first place. The company is led by Alex Dulay and Erich Daquioag of St. Alphonse. Their innovative lollipop delivers essential nutrients while helping detect iron deficiency. The product aims to improve health outcomes, particularly in developing countries.

Dr. Joel Cox of Yarmouth Regional Hospital earned second place for the LP Comfort Seat. The device improves positioning and comfort for infants undergoing lumbar puncture procedures.

LeBlanc said the quality of this year’s participants reflects the strength of the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“The ideas presented were grounded in real challenges and driven by a strong sense of purpose,” she said. “It is encouraging to see so many entrepreneurs focused on creating practical solutions that can make a meaningful impact both locally and beyond.”

Programs such as Spark Nova Scotia continue to play an important role in fostering innovation and supporting startups. They also help build a stronger, more resilient regional economy.
