Western REN’s “Get Side-Tracked” Initiative Wins International Award of Excellence
Western Nova Scotia — The Western Regional Enterprise Network (Western REN) received the 2026 Award of Excellence for Outstanding Multi-Community/Regional Program from Business Retention & Expansion International (BREI). BREI presented the award during its 2026 Conference on June 17, 2026, recognizing innovative business retention and expansion work across North America.
About the Project
Western REN earned the honour for its “Get Side-Tracked” initiative, a transformative project that used the region’s trail network to strengthen tourism, support local businesses, and create new economic opportunities throughout Western Nova Scotia. The project brought together municipalities, tourism organizations, ATV associations, businesses, and volunteers to reimagine existing recreational assets as a catalyst for regional economic development.
Project Outcomes
The initiative delivered significant improvements along the trail, including new visitor amenities, public art installations, enhanced trail experiences, and a business participation program that involved more than 40 local businesses. The team also rebranded the trail as the Dark Sky T’Railway. What many once saw as a recreational trail system now serves as a major economic asset that attracts visitors, supports local commerce, and showcases the region’s unique culture and heritage.
“This project is a great example of how business retention and expansion efforts can help support local businesses and communities while impacting the wider region,” said Ryan Kelly, Executive Director of Business Retention & Expansion International. “Our selection committee loved this project and was pleased to present the Western Regional Enterprise Network with this award,” Kelly said.
“To be recognized for a project that brought everyone involved so much joy is a sign to keep going!” said Angélique LeBlanc, CEO of Western REN.
Regional Impact
The project has also sparked interest from other communities across Nova Scotia that want to implement similar initiatives. Judges praised the program’s strong partnerships, measurable economic outcomes, and innovative approach to connecting tourism development with long-term business growth.
The Western Regional Enterprise Network leads an extensive network of business and public sector partnerships and works to create a business- and investment-friendly environment in Western Nova Scotia. A partnership between the Province of Nova Scotia and seven municipal units, Western REN “sets the table” for economic development by balancing direct business-facing services with region-wide collaborations and projects.
