Western REN Study Shows Population Growth and Challenges in Southwest Nova Scotia
Yarmouth, NS – A new study on population growth in Western Nova Scotia, highlights both positive growth trends and major challenges. Commissioned by the Western Regional Enterprise Network (Western REN) and conducted by ATN Strategies, the study looks at how the region’s population is changing and what needs to be done to support continued growth.
More People Moving to the Region
For many years, Southwest Nova Scotia was losing people. However, the study shows that between 2016 and 2021, the population grew to 48,210. If current trends continue, it could reach nearly 50,000 by 2027. In a best-case scenario, the region might see more than 53,000 residents by 2032.
“This is a turning point for the region,” said Western REN CEO Angelique LeBlanc . “We’re seeing growth, but to keep it going, we need to focus on housing, healthcare, and transportation.”
Biggest Challenges: Housing, Healthcare, and Transportation
Even though the population is growing, the study warns that some serious problems could slow down progress.
- Housing: There aren’t enough homes for new residents, and construction is slow due to a shortage of skilled workers.
- Healthcare: Emergency rooms often close, and there aren’t enough specialized medical facilities.
- Transportation: Many rural areas have poor access to major towns and services, making it harder for people to find jobs or get healthcare.
Opportunities for the Future
Despite these challenges, the study also highlights opportunities for the region. Fishing remains strong, but there is room to grow in tourism, renewable energy, and technology.
The report suggests that helping small businesses and offering better job training programs could make the economy stronger. “We need to support local businesses and prepare workers for new industries,” said CEO Angelique LeBlanc
What Happens Next?
The study encourages government leaders, businesses, and communities to work together to solve these problems and take advantage of opportunities.
“This report proves that growth is possible, but we need a plan,” CEO LeBlanc added. “If we invest in the right areas, we can build a strong future for Southwest Nova Scotia.”
As the region continues to change, the findings from this study will help guide decisions that can create a better, more sustainable future.
