Roman’s New Start: A Connector Program Success Story

From War to Welcome: Roman’s Brave Leap

In April 2024, Roman Porodko began a bold new chapter of his life as a Connectee in the Western Regional Enterprise Network’s (Western REN) Connector Program. But the road to Nova Scotia was far from easy.

Back in Ukraine, Roman held a Master of Science in Radio Engineering and built a 30-year career in electrical engineering. When war escalated, he made the heart-wrenching decision to leave home behind—his wife stayed in Ukraine to support their adult son, who, deemed essential to the country, was unable to leave.

Despite the emotional toll, Roman remained determined. He was chasing not just safety, but hope—a chance to rebuild and thrive in a new country.

A Warm Welcome in Cornwallis

Roman arrived in Nova Scotia in March 2024 and spent his first few weeks in Halifax taking care of paperwork before settling into the Annapolis Basin Conference Centre in Cornwallis. There, he found more than just a place to stay—he found community. He made friends, discovered the stunning coastline, and began laying the foundation for his new life.

To improve his English and adapt to the Canadian workplace, Roman enrolled in the Digby Area Learning Association (DALA)’s workplace education program for newcomers. The program offered more than just language skills—it offered a path forward.

Making the Right Connections

Recognizing Roman’s impressive background, Chelsea MacAlpine, Case Manager at DALA, introduced him to the Connector Program—a perfect next step for someone with Roman’s drive and expertise.

Roman had an open work permit and was willing to be flexible in his job search. But his heart remained in electrical engineering. Like many immigrants, he also focused on finding a job that could lead to permanent residency and long-term stability.

There was just one big hurdle: his age made him ineligible for the more popular candidate-driven immigration streams. Instead, he had to rely on the employer-driven Atlantic Immigration Program, which required a very specific job match.

Enter Tri-Star Industries Limited.

A Job, a Home, and a New Beginning

Tri-Star Industries is a staple in Yarmouth’s business landscape since 1973. They specialize in building customized emergency vehicles—from ambulances to fire trucks. Tri-Star had a job opening and was already designated under the Atlantic Immigration Program. Through the Connector Program, Roman connected with Connor Adams, Tri-Star’s Operations Manager.

Roman got the job—but there was one more challenge: finding a place to live in a tight housing market.

Thanks to the Connector Program, Roman met Elizabeth Zavala, the YReach Settlement Staff person in Yarmouth who helped him take his next steps. With her help, he found housing and was ready to start work by summer 2024.

From Paint Crew to Powerhouse

Roman’s first role at Tri-Star was with the paint crew to fill an open spot, but it didn’t take long for his potential and expertise to shine through. Connor Adams helped him transition into the pre-fabrication electrical section—a crucial step in understanding the company’s operations. Today, Roman is thriving as a key member of Tri-Star’s electrical crew.

In Their Own Words

“It was not so easy coming to Canada from the Ukraine,” Roman shared. “I had a lot of people help me here in Nova Scotia. Getting put in touch with the Connector Program, led me to finding a job I like and getting the opportunity to stay, live, and work here. I would not have this opportunity without the Connector Program.”

Connor Adams echoed that sentiment:

“I don’t typically put out job ads as much anymore—I get a lot of people through the door looking for jobs, but the make-it-or-break-it in hiring is that personal recommendation. I know whoever is coming through the Connector Program is going to be skilled and professional in their field.”

A Story of Community, Connection and Evolution

Roman’s story is a testament to the impact of the Western REN Connector Program in helping skilled newcomers integrate into the workforce and build a new future in Nova Scotia. With determination, community support, and the right connections, Roman has successfully found a new home and a fulfilling career in Yarmouth. His journey is an inspiring example of resilience and the power of programs that bridge talented newcomers with local employers.

And there’s more to come! The Connector Program is ever expanding and evolving. You’ll be hearing about some exciting expansion into Connecting Apprentices to tradespeople soon – stay tuned!
