The “Welcome to Western Nova Scotia” App Launches to Support Newcomers
Making Western Nova Scotia Feel Like Home: A New App for Newcomers
Moving to a new community is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming—especially in smaller towns and rural areas where resources may not always be easy to find. That’s why the Western REN and Welcome Platform Tech Technologies have teamed up to launch the “Welcome to Western Nova Scotia” app, a tool designed to make settling into the region easier than ever.
A Digital Guide for Newcomers
The app, now available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, is a one-stop guide for newcomers. Whether you’re looking for housing, healthcare, childcare, or education, the app provides instant access to essential services and local programs. It also offers translation support in multiple languages, making information more accessible for those still getting familiar with English or French.
In addition to these resources, the app includes personalized checklists to help newcomers navigate life in their new community. Need to find a doctor? Enroll your children in school? Get a discount at a local business? The app has it covered.
A Community-Driven Approach
The Western REN leads a group called the Local Immigration Partnership, or LIP. These LIPs are funded throughout the country by the federal government’s Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada or IRCC. According to Alex Rios Moreno, Local Immigration Partnership Coordinator at the Western REN, the app is a “game-changer” for Western Nova Scotia.
“It’s about making our communities more welcoming and ensuring everyone has the tools to thrive here,” he said.
Local businesses are also stepping up by offering special welcome deals through the app. Businesses interested in participating can visit https://western-ns.welcomeapp.ca/ and click “Contribute” to submit their offers.
Expanding the Welcome Everywhere Movement
This initiative is part of Welcome Platform’s “Welcome Everywhere” movement, which aims to support immigrants and newcomers in smaller communities across Canada. Liwordson Vijayabalan, CEO of Welcome Platform Tech Technologies, highlighted the company’s commitment to supporting rural communities.
“This app builds on our mission to support newcomers in smaller communities where they face unique challenges. We’re proud to support Western Nova Scotia and look forward to expanding our ‘Welcome Everywhere’ initiative to Halifax, PEI, and beyond.”
A Warmer Welcome, One Click at a Time
Technology is playing an increasing role in helping rural areas thrive, and this app is a shining example of how digital solutions can build stronger, more inclusive communities. By providing newcomers with the resources they need from day one, Western Nova Scotia is setting a new standard for welcome and support.
