FAQs
Q: What’s the time commitment?
- Board Members typically serve a three-year term. There are six to eight meetings a year. Meeting locations move around the region and are often held at a municipal office. Remote attendance is possible as well. The commitment is meaningful but manageable for leaders with busy schedules. The calendar of meetings (Board and Committee) is established in advance of the new fiscal year; calendar invitations will be sent to all for annual meeting planning.
Q: Do I need governance experience to apply?
Not at all. While governance experience is an asset, it’s not a requirement. We are looking for private sector leaders who bring business experience, leadership, and a regional perspective. Training and orientation are provided for all new Board Members.
Q: I’m interested, but I’m not sure if my skills are a fit. Should I still apply?
Yes! We welcome applications from all private sector leaders. While we’re looking mostly for the skills outlined in the application, our priority is for a well-rounded board with members bringing varied perspectives and skills. Applications are kept on file for future opportunities, and all applicants will be notified of their status.
Q: Is this a volunteer position?
Yes, this is a volunteer governance role. Board Members contribute their expertise and leadership to help guide the strategic direction of the Western REN and support regional economic growth.
Q: Who can apply?
We are specifically seeking leaders from the private sector. If you bring business experience, leadership, and a passion for Western Nova Scotia, we encourage you to apply.
