Building Western NS’s Workforce One Connection at a Time
If we want stronger communities, we need stronger workforce pipelines, and that doesn’t happen by accident. It happens through intentional connection.
By Shelley Bellefontaine, Connector Program Coordinator
In my role as Connector Program Manager with the Western Regional Enterprise Network (Western REN), I have the privilege of working at the intersection of people, opportunity, and economic growth.
The Connector Program is simple in concept, but powerful in impact.
We connect:
- Post-secondary graduates
- Newcomers to Canada
- International students
…with local business leaders, employers, and decision-makers.
Not for job placements alone, but for meaningful conversations, referrals, and real-world insight into where opportunity actually exists.
Because the reality is this: most career opportunities don’t come from applying online, they come from who you meet, what you learn, and the doors that open from there.
Why We’re Focusing on 6 Priority Sectors
As we move into the next phase of the program, our work is becoming even more intentional.
We are aligning directly with the Province of Nova Scotia’s priority sectors to drive real outcomes where growth is happening.
Our six sectors of focus are:
1. Defence & Aerospace
Nova Scotia is rapidly strengthening its position in defence, marine, and aerospace industries. This sector offers high-value careers, advanced manufacturing roles, and long-term stability.
2. AI & Digital
From digital adoption to emerging technologies, this space is evolving fast. There is growing demand for talent across data, marketing tech, IT, and digital transformation.
3. Housing & Construction
We are faced with housing challenges, so this sector is critical. Skilled trades, project management, and construction services are in high demand, and the need isn’t slowing down.
4. Fisheries & Agriculture
These are foundational industries in our region. Innovation, sustainability, and workforce renewal are key and there are real opportunities for those ready to step in.
5. Energy & Clean Technology
As we shift toward more sustainable energy solutions, this sector is gaining momentum. There is opportunity here for both skilled trades and technical professionals.
6. Natural Resources
Forestry, mining, and resource development continue to play a vital role in our economy. With the right workforce strategies, this sector has strong potential for continued growth.
What This Means for Employers and Job Seekers
For employers, this is about access:
- Access to motivated, vetted candidates
- Access to new talent pools
- Access to low-risk hiring pathways and workforce support
For individuals, this is about direction:
- Understanding where the real opportunities are
- Building connections that lead somewhere
- Gaining insight you won’t find on a job board
We’re not guessing where the jobs are, we are actively aligning with where the province is going.

The Bigger Picture
When we align workforce development with priority sectors, we help:
- Strengthen local economies
- Support business growth
- Retain talent in our region
- Create pathways for people to build meaningful, lasting careers
This is how communities grow, not just economically, but sustainably.
Let’s Connect
If you’re an employer looking to build your workforce, or someone exploring your next step, I’d encourage you to reach out.
Let’s have a conversation about where you fit, who you should meet, and how we can move things forward.
Because the right connection can change everything.
