The Hidden Job Market: Why Who You Know Still Matters in Western Nova Scotia
By Shelley Bellefontaine, Connector Program Manager
You’ve polished your résumé. You applied to every job posting you can find. You’ve refreshed your inbox more times than you’d like to admit.
And yet, nothing!
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Across Western Nova Scotia, talented people such as recent graduates, newcomers, and career changers, are doing everything right on paper but still struggling to get noticed. Meanwhile, employers in the same communities are quietly looking for their next great hire.
So, what’s the disconnect?
Most Opportunities Never Get Posted
Here’s something that rarely gets talked about: a significant number of jobs in our region are never advertised publicly. They’re filled through conversations. A business owner mentions they’re looking for someone at a chamber event. A manager asks a colleague if they know anyone. A friend makes an introduction over coffee.
This is the hidden job market and in a close-knit region like Western Nova Scotia, it’s how a lot of hiring actually happens.
That’s not a flaw in the system. It’s human nature. People hire people they trust, and trust often starts with a personal connection. The challenge is that if you’re new to the region, fresh out of school, or pivoting careers, you may not have those connections yet.
And that’s exactly the gap the Connector Program was built to close.
What Is the Connector Program?
The Professional Connector Program, delivered by the Western Regional Enterprise Network, is a straightforward concept with real impact: we match emerging talent with established professionals who know the local landscape.
It works in three steps:
First, we get to know you: your background, your skills, your goals, and the industries you’re interested in. Then we match you with a Connector: a local business owner, manager, or professional who has the experience and network to help. Finally, you have a one-to-one conversation, not a job interview, but a real discussion about career pathways, industry insight, and opportunities you might not find on a job board.
That’s it. One conversation. But the ripple effects can be remarkable.
A Connector might introduce you to someone in your field. They might point you toward an opportunity you didn’t know existed. They might simply help you understand how business works in this part of Nova Scotia — what employers value, what industries are growing, and where your skills fit in.
In a region with over 40,000 projected job openings in the coming years and 135 occupations rated as having good or very good employment prospects, the talent is needed. The key is making the right connections.
Why Connectors Matter
Being a Connector isn’t about having a job to offer; it’s about being willing to have a conversation.
Many of our Connectors are business owners and professionals who got where they are because someone once opened a door for them. Now they’re paying it forward. They share insight, offer perspective, and make introductions that help someone else take the next step.
It doesn’t require a major time commitment. It requires generosity and the willingness to sit down with someone motivated and say, “Let me tell you what I’ve learned. And let me introduce you to someone you should meet.”
That’s how communities grow. Not just through programs and policies, but through people who choose to invest in the person sitting across from them.
It Starts with a Conversation
Western Nova Scotia has incredible people >> skilled, driven, and creative. Sometimes they just need someone willing to open a door.
If you’re a job seeker, a newcomer, or a recent graduate looking to build your career here, the Connector Program can help you access the opportunities and relationships that don’t show up in a job search. We’ll match you with someone who can help you navigate the local landscape and take your next step with confidence.
And if you’re an established professional or business leader, consider becoming a Connector. Your experience and your network could be exactly what someone needs to find their footing in our region, and you may just meet your next great hire in the process.
Good things start with a conversation. Let’s have one.
